"Rythmically Speaking is an interesting, demonstrative history of the evolution of jazz explained from the drummer's throne. Though somewhat brief -- only 59 minutes long -- the DVD offers an easily digested tutorial of key genre developments inspired by percussionist innovation. According to Koenig, the percussive pursuits of legends seuch as Dave Tough, Jo Jones, Kenny Clarke, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, and Andy Cyrille provided teh rhythmic terrian for jazz's front-line players to broaden the boundaries of melody and harmony. The author deftly demostrates each player's stylistic contribution and the resulting effect it had on the direction of jazz. Koenig's educated insight and clear enthusiasm for the subject makes this DVD a worthwhile purchase for both novices and knowledgeable jazz cats."
